There are several betta keepers on here and I'm not one of them but I'm pretty sure you shouldn't keep the male and females together. I do know if the male and female were attempting to breed the male can easily kill the female.

The substrate for these guys really doesn't matter, that would be your choice. Plants are the same way. Depending on your lighting I'd try to stick with simple plants such as java fern.

thank you, i guess i am going to have one lucky male betta then lol, 10 gallons all to himself, i just love how pretty they are but hate when kept in tiny bowls with almost no room to swim.

    Agree with anthony fully.
1)if you want to keep 2 use a divider
2)Remember no overkill on filtration unless you do a prefilter sponge since the males are slow graceful swimmers
3)For plants I'd suggest something such as crypts and maybe a few vals for them to swim through.

A pre filter sponge is simply an open cell sponge that is placed on the filter intake. It prevents smaller and more docile fish from being sucked into the filter.

LoL Don't worry about it. We're here to answer any question you have, no matter how many you have.
You can find them at some stores but you might have a better chance of getting one at the LFS. If you go just ask for an AquaClear replacement sponge/filter insert. You can get the size you need and cut it to fit your filter intake.

ok i think i have an extra 1 , believe it or not from my new filter system, it has sponge on bottom, then charcoal, then mesh of white stuff, is the sponge for that the kind you are talking about???? Yeah, that should be the same type of sponge. Just use a knife or scissors and cut a hole in the center of it so it fits on the filter intake (the part in the water).
