When you say "or anything like that" do you mean no heat, no filter, no light?

Even with Danio's I would still try to keep the water temp at at least 68-70 degrees. You would be surprised at how well a little 13 dollar Wal Mart "Tetra" brand heater will heat up a 20 gallon tank...

corys can be keep in most community tanks.

here a small list of some nice and easy fish.

    swordfish
    Guppies
    neon tetras
    glowlight tetras

and those are the only fish that I really know that would do well for a starter.

well for the neons you can do 20, may be more you need some that has keep more the 5 to really know how many.

Guppies you can have a ton, right now I have 20, and that will change when they have babies(which happens a lot)

swords I'm not sure on this one, only had a pair for a short time.

Glowlights I would say ten, may be more need some one with a little more experience with them to tell you.

    Re: Starting out from scratch!!!

20g recommendations with color in mind:
3 of the smaller corydoras (albino)
    1 oto (algae/plants)
    6 neon tetras (neon bl/red)
2-3 male fancy guppies (various colors)
    3 serpae tetras(red/black)black skirt(Black/silver)white skirt
...You have many possiblities (keep in mind with the smaller fish at adult growth you can always do more of ...in comparance to the larger adult fish such as A plat. gourami for example).

    Re: Starting out from scratch!!!

    CONSTANTLY!
Defin DO NOT add a female with males in a 20g. You'll be overpopulated, have stress issues, deformities in the fry, and water stability issues.
20g wouldn't handle all the fry they can produce (even if they ate most of them) imo.
PLUS the males are the ones with all the color, and you need a high female to male ratio if you mix the sexes.

like every 2 or 3 months I think, swords take longer, and grow slower, they are also not as colorful as guppies.

    Re: Starting out from scratch!!!

Clone tank (10g) to use as a grow out tank.
But again, will have issues of where to place them once they come of size (unless you have a buddy or lfs willing to take them...and most lfs won't pay anything).
