What to put in a 2 gallon hex tank?
So I bought a 2 gallon hex tank at the Goodwill identical to the one I have one of my male bettas in because I thought the hood was shorted out on his tank. Turns out that it was just the lightbulb burned out. So, now I have this 2 gallon hex tank that is sitting here looking rather forlornly empty. It doesn't have a filter (and doesn't have room for one), but does have a bubble stone. Is there *anything* other than a betta I can put it in? I am going to put it in my son's room so he can have his own tank and thought it'd be neat to have something other than a betta...since I now have eleven. :p Any ideas are appreciated.

you can always put shrimp and a single guppy the the guppy will help with the shrimp pop by eat the babies.

Would a guppy be okay without a filter?

I'd tend to think so, but definately need a heater for them and the smallest airstone you could find put on a low bubble.

Have a bubble stone already (came with the tank), but the tank is so small I don't know if a heater would fit. My tank that's identical to it says at around 76-78 degrees because of the flourescent light being so close to the water level and it being a 10watt for 2 gallons (all my other tanks hover right around 73 degrees or so).

Guppies are defin tropical and temp. fluct. will give them stress related diseases (ie. ich). If you were going to do it without a heater I'd HIGHLY recommend sticking a tom oscar temp monitor that can alert you to dangerous swings. Quick link so you can see what I am talking about-->http://www.cheappetproducts.net/AQUARIUM_TEMP_ALERT_Digital_LCD_THERMOMETER-P47379.html...The Hydor 2.5 Watt mini heater might fit linked here for a visual and sizing specs->http://absolutelypets.stores.yahoo.net/miheaqhe15wf.html

Personally, that's why I don't like the small tanks...they cost just as much IF NOT MORE than running say a 10g after you buy all the mini equipment...then even after all that your options are limited and maintaining stability within the water is VERY difficult. But I understand why some people are left with no choice but small tanks (lack of room).

No lack of room here. LOL! I just don't want the tank going to waste. I'm kind of leaning toward letting my son pick out his own betta, basically just because I've been promising him one since his died last year (we were having horrible bacterial blooms in the tiny one gallon fish bowl we were keeping him in and I didn't know what was wrong). I'll end up caring for the fish 99% of the time anyway because my son doesn't live with me and I see him about once every 4-6 weeks (long distance between where I live and where his dad lives and he lives with his dad). Anywho, thanks for the suggestions. If I do the betta I will probably forego any shrimp just 'cuz all of mine are now addicted to brine shrimp. :p They wouldn't touch the bloodworms, but they're going nuts over the shrimp. Thanks for all the advice!

that sound like a nice idea, you should have feed blood worms more often.

    Re: 2g Stocking/Compatibility (Questions & Advice)

My guys (and gals) were never interested in the bloodworms, so they'd just end up floating around the top of the tank and I'd have to fish them out. As soon as I feed the brine shrimp, they're gone within a few minutes. After two or three times feeding the bloodworms, I got tired of having to fish them out.

O that stinks, what did you do with all your other bloodworms? I hope to be able to get a few live blood worms this summer.

be sure to pre-rinse that brine shrimp if its live...salt=salinity and bettas are not a brackish fish.

    Re: 2g Stocking/Compatibility (Questions & Advice)

The bloodworms were freeze dried (yeah, probably first mistake, but I didn't know they had frozen :p), so I just tossed them. The brine shrimp are the San Francisco Bay Sally's Brine Shrimp that come frozen. I did rinse them a little before I fed them, mainly 'cuz there wasn't much fluid and they wouldn't come out of the cup very easily. Hehe...Liam, the male that's in the two gallon on my desk, is still checking the gravel to see if he missed any and it's been like an hour and a half since I fed them! LOL! The girls went REALLY nuts over them. They weren't too sure at first, but after they tasted one or two, they were zooming around the tank trying to catch them all (as they fell).

yea I wish I had some better eggs, the last hatch I did was just down right weak. If fact it was so weak I put them in a half gallon plastic container to see if I can grow them to adult, because if I kill them it not that much of a waste seeing how that was how weak the batch was.

Okay, am I the only one wondering what Scott is referring to?
Would you like to fill me in on whose eggs you are referring to?
