did a complete tear down, cleaned the glass (inside and out), painted on the background (flat black) and releveled the stand.

    Wow! that looks soo nice.
I never had luck with gravel being we have crappy water pressure- makes it too hard to siphon using a python so I've always been pretty much forced to do sand substrates.

Hint for those with cruddy water pressure & wanting to use python no spill clean n' fill or similar-- go barebottom or use sand. Lol!

thanks dawn ! we don't use the faucet adapter when we vacuum/fill the tanks, graity siphon down the drain (winter time) or out the back door to the flower garden. i made an adapter that hooks up to the shower spicket to fill the tanks.

I always wanted to hook up my tanks with a flush valve (like at my 1 local petstore).
Man, the things I woulda did early on if they had computers like today!
But then again, maybe that's a good thing because then I think of the money I'd have spent. haha!

So, what requirements do African Cichlid's need? I may make my 50 gallon a cichlid tank once everything said and done...

That depends on which africans. Each lake have there own needs as well as the riverine species.
