    Need some suggestions...
Now that I have my new 55gal tank, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what kind of community fish I should get? My girlfriend and I want something different (we're tired of the usual stuff: mollys, guppys, danio's etc. etc.). As you can tell by my profile pic, I like strange / exotic things... (RTC now and spotted raphael cat before)

After looking at some freshwater fish you don't see very often I'd do some Scarlet Gem Badis, Celestial Pearl Danios, American Flagfish, and Boesemani Rainbows.

A flowerhorn or arowana in a 55 gallon tank ? That's not a good idea.

people ussually up grade and a flower horn goes to like 10"-15" and arowna depends on how good care you take of it and if you take really good care you might need to upgrade

You cannot assume people will upgrade their tank. Flowerhorns can get to be 16" and arowana can get to be over 36" long. Neither of those fish would be happy in a tank that is 13" wide.

I've seen plenty of arowana that were well above 2 feet long.

Also, the OP wants community fish...

exactly, community fish, but something other than mollys, danios, etc. If I wanted an arowana (which i'm not into anyways), I'd have one by now being that the last time I was there, a LFS had baby ones, and if I were to get something that would grow as large as them, I would upgrade my tanks as it grew (like i'm doing with my RTC). As for discus, I would love to get a couple of those, but if I ever keep them, I will have a tank devoted to them, because like you said, they are a lot of work, and from what I've read, they need certain conditions for their water. Rainbows are a nice looking fish, and the thought has crossed my mind with them.

They can be community fish as long as you cater to the Discus..... I keep somewhat of a Discus community. Tetras, Corys, Ottos, Mollys, Platys, Swordtails and Rams are compatible with Discus.

Gouramis and Angelfish are arguably compatible. I keep Angels with Discus.... but a lot says not to do that, I feel they are compatible as long as the Angels dont get to territorial (breeding Angels).

There are others too.... I just cant think of any more right now. Also plants do work with Discus even though everything says it is hard (well it is but that is the fun)

Truly exotic freshwater fish are almost always difficult to keep/breed and that is why not everybody has them.
