    what can live in a 5 gal tank


    Well i cleaned my what i thought was a 10 gal now a 5 gal. and i have it set up and i am going to let it set for a few days. but what can i put in it. i need some ideas.

    One betta, or 5-7 male guppies, or endlers, or neons ... think small fish in small numbers.

    I have 7 male guppies in my planted 5 gallon with a couple cherry shrimp. I do 50% water changes twice a week since that's probably a little bit overstocked. They seem pretty happy.

    What you could do (if I remember correctly you asked about frogs) is get a betta and two african dwarf frogs and one or two otto cats.

    i thought about getting 2 female bettas ( was told they could live together but not real sure) i wanted to still get 2 cray fish but i dont think that will work now. have to get the big tank up.

    I saw some bamboo shrimp yesterday at Petco that were pretty cool looking ... and big too. Almost big enough to shish ka bob on the grill ... :eek: :confused:

    someone just offered me 3 gourami fish and 2 algae eating fish. they wouldnt make it in my 5 gal would they??

    What type of Gouramis and algae eaters ? The "standard" algae eaters will be way too big.

    Dwarf gouramis should work. If they're not dwarf they will get too big if they're not already

    i asked how big they were and here is what they said The gourami are maybe and inch in length and the octo are about 1/2 inch in size. I would not say they are large.

    they arent large now but how old are they

    otto cats will only grow to be less than an inch usually so they will work

    i didnt ask how old. im going to decide agianst the fish. This tank is for my oldest so im going to let her pick some fish.

    Sounds good. I have a feeling the fish were young and would have been too small for that size tank.

    The first tank I got was a 3 gal I bought from someone who couldn't keep it and it came with 2 dwarf frogs and a male betta. I had to change the water about 3 times a week but they seemed to live in it okay. That made me go out and purchase a 15 gal tank new and get some pink and blue tetras. I had l believe 3 tetras in it. Remember if you get female guppies they may be pregnant and can have babies up to 5 different times without a male present. Also female Bettas may lay eggs in your tank and you will have to keep it cleaned out. Some of my bettas drop eggs once every 5 to 6 weeks and some of them obsorb the eggs and don't drop them. Good luck with your tank and I hope you will post what you get once you buy your fish.

    i wanted to bring this back up because i still need some ideas. or just what fish can live in the 5 gal so when i go to get fish that i wont get some that will not do good in the tank.

    What's the footprint of your 5 gallon tank ? Length and Width.

    14-5/8" wide, 10-1/4" deep, and 15-1/4 high, bow front.

    Okay. I'd really try to look for fish that don't get larger than 2" long. I know you have the 29 gallon you're going to be setting up soon so I think in this tank if you're going to put plants in it your best bet would be to get some little schooling fish. Tetras would be a great example because most of them don't get larger than 2" big.

    Edit: One or two Dwarf Gourami would work also. Just try to stay under the 2" mark.

    would the little puffer fish do okay in it? the ones at walmart, prolly not get mine there but that is the type. and i am suppost to be getting a 30 gal next monday for 35$.
