no idea to be honest, and i'll probably get scolded for not knowing what it is. But all i do is just take my water into petsmart or petco after cleaning it, and if they say the water is good, i put him back in

You really should get a good test kit. Your puffer is VERY cute though:)

Yeah, not a good idea at all. You MUST have a hydrometer, pH, NitrAte, NitrIte, and ammonia test kits minimum. Never take their word on it.

Do you add salt with each water change, I mean to the water that you are replacing not the actual tank water?

well, last time i had to, because i did an entire change and rinse of the tank as i needed to replace the sand that i had to the black sand. But for my regular weekly changes i don't add more salt to the water that i'm replacing as it's only a little 10% change. But what was weird when i had to add salt after changing the sand, was that not all of the salt evaporated, and that's what the white stuff is on the sand and that's never happend before.

With saltwater every time you take water out you must replace the salt for that amount of water. If you don't, you're just slowly turning the saltwater tank into a freshwater one.

Salt doesn't evaporate it can only be removed through water changes. To kept your salinity at a stable you should be adding salt when removing it from the tank. When you say salt you do mean ocean salts and not just aquarium salts, correct?
