Re: lemon heres a head scratcher for you

No, they are not..... I cant tell the one to the right too well but the one to the left IS NOT an altum.... It is a Leopaldi Angelfish.... the one on the right though from what I see looks like a Peruvian Scalare.... again I cannot see its face too well.... It does not really have the "Altum pattern" to it nor the finnage for me to think even a bit that it is an Altum.

Sorry it took me a while to respond... out visiting family Easter weekend.

I dont think its the stores fault either.

Here is the problem with Altums..... they are RARE..... furthermore trade collected from wild Amazonian species is getting more and more difficult each year limiting importation of these specimens.

Many times when the US importers in Florida get the stock in (or elsewhere) the scan quick over the items to determine the species. As Scalares, Leopaldis and Altums are have some things in common, it is an easy identification error on import. They then sell to the wholesalers and retailers passing on this error and most of the time it goes undetected to the store level.

As shoppers we must ALL be aware of the creatures because ultimately we are the ones that must know the difference and not rely on the stores and what they say.

Strangely though they both look different as I said. The one on the right looks like a Peruvian Scalare and the one to the left looks like a Leopaldi, 2 different types of Angelfish.... ALL BUT the Altum :) (there are 3 types of Angels - Scalare, Leopaldi and Altum)
