What cichlids would be best for my 55 gal planted tank? I was thinking of SA Dwarves.

Yeah, SA Dwarves would work as well as Angels and Rams.

Africans will pull out the plants as well as most other larger cichlids.

Yes it is waterless as of now. I am planning ahead. I will be moving next week so I am going to start over. My setup as of now includes terrible lighting good filtration (Fluval 404) and a natural sand substrate. I will be buying new lighting (any suggestions), additive like flourite for the substrate or something better if available.

The lighting you need will depend on the plant you choose. If you choose low light plants you can get away with a normal fluorescent bulb.

All of the dwarf cichlids like Apistogramma are great for planted tanks as well as your kribs, keyholes and rams. Firemouth cichlids also do great in planted tanks. Stay away from fish that grow huge like Oscars and are big diggers and also the Lake Malawi Cichlids that require salt.

Apistogramma tend to be a bit on the pricey side but let them give you free fish and don't get a bunch. If interested in those at all, get one male and two females and in no time you'll have a bunch. Lots of lots of species of the
Apistogramma in all colors. Great fish.
