Crushed Coral from Saltwater to Freshwater (Cleaning Advice)
hi i purched like 50 pounds+ of crushed coral from this guy yesterday it was supose to be 2 Magnum 100gallon canister filters
1 Powerhead 402 air pump for under gravel filter
1 unspecified air pump for under gravel filter
    2 under gravel filter trays
3 bags of real crushed coral (50lbs white)
    Extra filter sleeves
    Assorted aquarium decorations
but all i got from him was 2 filters not even rated for 100 its rated for 80 and the crushed coral so he riped me off but then again 40$ still worth it he claims the guy who took the tank took the other stuff. well he said he used the coral for salt water and i wanna use it for fresh and good ideas out there?

Rinse it really well. You can also soak it in hot water with a very small amount of bleach for about an hour then soak it in hot water with Prime for about 4 hours.

Why did you still give him the original amount for less stuff? :) However, it is stil a good deal, with a shady business man. Glad you didnt get really ripped off.

Parts for the Magnums are kind of expensive... like 8-15 bucks a piece for most things and that adds up quick considering new these filters are the cheapest pound-for-pound on the market (canisters that is)....

Ummmm. what type of fish with the crushed coral? I have read that crushed coral can raise the PH of your water (not bad for some/most fish REALLY bad for others) I could be off a bit on that, but I swear I remember reading something about that.

I know Angels like a low PH.... I had platys and they dont care, they flourish in anything (almost), convicts I dont know about but as they are CA/SA I would assume they also like acidic-neutral water. Flowerhorns being a hybrid that again I will admit I know nothing about, I dont know.....

Again, I would not use it for the Angels! Acidic, Soft, Warm water for them. That is where I think many mess up and loose them. I have had those parameters and ::knock on wood:: have not lost an adult Angel yet.... fry is a different story.

Crushed Coral or CC will buffer your ph up to higher number, somewhere between 7.5 and 8 so I would suggest NOT using it with some of the new world cichlids but I have it in with my FH as well as some mbuna and they don't seem to mind. Keep in mind that raising the ph, which in turn will raise you kh, should be done GRADUALLY and over a period of time. Try putting some of the CLEANED cc in your filter for a while before adding it as a total substrate.

I use about 2 cups in each of my tanks due to extremely low PH from tap. I also keep about 1 cup in each of the water jugs I use for water changes. It helps keep my ph at about 7.2

Lucky you, I have to buffer my water down in PH as mine is neutral. I keep my tank at 6.5

No, actually I dont know where to get it. I have TONS of areas in my filters to put it in... Currently I use the product "Proper PH 6.5" and it works plus with my driftwood it helps hold the PH down.

Should be able to find it just about anywhere. Lowes, HD even Wally World. Just make sure it is not treated with any chemicals.

    Not At All! ;o)

I've seen peat plugs online too. I may have a site book marked that carries them.

Yup! Crushed Coral for all intensive purposes is aragonite (calcium carbonate)... if the water is relatively neutral or acidic, it dissolves into the water raising calcium levels & PH...
