Filtration Recommendation for 20g/77Liter (Advice Needed).

Hi, i have just aquired a 77liter - (i think) hex tank, i need a filter for it, and was wondering what the best filter for a hex tank is. firstly check my calculations

    6 sides:

    width 15 inches
    depth 15 inches
    hight 21 inches.

i also need to check what a 25w bulb can do interms of planting it, if anything, that may need upgrading too.

p.s. bad timing on this tank as still trying to get my 216 liter tank going. [laughing]

    many thanks.

You need to be able to filter the total amount 3/4 times per hour so (calculated) you need to be able to filter 308-231 or 60-80 gallons per hour any filter that can do any of the 2 is fine :D

15x15x21 would come out to 20 gallons/77 liters. Generally depending on what you keep in the tank what I recommend is to filter the tank 5-10 times per hour. That would be 100-200 gallons per hour in your case.

i think im going to go for the fluval 2.... wot do you think, personally i think i should try to make a undergravel filter as its a hex tank and dont realy want to put any sort of background on it or anything, but the tube is missing, has the plastic trays (2 of them).

i dont know what undergravel systems are like. anyone help? or you think i'd be better to go with the fluval 2?

Imo undergravel filters are crap, dirt builds up beneath the substrate where it's difficult to remove.

I've no experience with the fluval2 (looked it up and in it looks like it's going for $36.99 at Aquarium guys and is rated for 105gph). Your at the minimum end of 5-10x the flow rate. If I were you (which I'm not) I personally would go with something that has a higher flow rate such as the fluval 3 version for just $10 more which will filter at 185gph linked here-->http://www.aquariumguys.com/fluvalinternal2.html

Depending on what you have space for beneath the cabinet...another good line is the Rena Filstar Canister filter (has really big baskets that allow you to custom your media to your needs). But you will have transparentish hoses (Intake/outake)...they even have the smart heater which still goes in the tank, but easily connects to the intake. You also get one sweet spraybar which can connect to the outtake (and if you need a uv, coralife turbotwists WILL fit them as I have a 36w hooked to my xp4).

I can understand not wanting to do a background on a hex, but you can cover 3 sides with black? to hide your equipment...that or put some high growing plants in the back and use them for equipement coverage? Just a suggestion.

well i actually do have a spare fluval 3+, its in my 216L tank (ready for use), using both for some odd reason. i'll just use that, dont think a external filter is needed as only gunna have guppies and mollies in it. and maybe some plastic plants (the reali looking type) or maybe some anubalis on bogwood.

    thanks guys great advise. xx

hahaha thanks for the advice, this is my third tank and im running out of space now, thinking about putting my gournamies in it, do you think 8 full sized gournamies and 1 dwarf gournamie will be ok in the above size tank?

    Overstocking imo.
Most standard gouramis usually get 4"-6"
