Black bars are a sign of stress. Also, I wouldn't feed them feeder fish. A good quality pellet food would be best.

You can give them earthworms if you want. Nothing beats a good quality staple food with a bit of other quality foods thrown in for variety.

To bring this back up, on a male/female note, are both showing a nuchal hump or does one have more of an arrow shaped head. In the flowerhorn class, when getting ready for spawning, the female will "bar" up and enhance her colors. At this point she is significantly more aggressive than the male. If this is the case, watch the male. If you do see eggs, and if a pair they will be using the back glass for eggs or something flat, once the eggs are present, if male and female, let them both remain in the tank together for 24-48 hours so he might fertilize them, then put a divider in the tank or move him into his own tank. Flower horn at the 5" range become extremely aggressive. To house a pair of them at 10" you would need a 125, and even still you might have to separate them.
