Pretty sure they are brackish water naturally. It could be that if you asked a pet store they kept them in freshwater but I'm not sure if that's the case of if whom ever you asked just didn't know

Yes, as far as I know they are brackish water but I'm pretty sure they can be kept in freshwater. I know introducing them into freshwater can induce them to spawn. They're also pretty territorial and shouldn't be kept in a tank less than 20-30 gallons.

I'm sure if you got them from a LFS like PetCo or Petsmart they're kept in plain freshwater.

i use to have one thats why i asked, i keep it in freshwater and i didnt know if that was why it died. i want to get more. it was funny fish to because it would come out if another fish came near its home. but it really didnt bother the other fish.

I would think if it was being in freshwater alone he would have died a lot sooner.

If you want to take a risk LiveAquaria has them.
    <a class="postlink" href="http://liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=954+978&pcatid=978" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://liveaquaria.com/product/prod_dis ... pcatid=978</a>
I'm not sure if they have a minimum purchase price or not.

LiveAquaria lists them as brackish so I'm sure that's what they keep theirs in.
