gold saum and jack dempsey

    can anyone tell if either of these are male or female? the dempsey has a bit of red along the edge of its dorsal fin that can not be seen in the photo. thanks for any help/suggestions

    Sexing the dempsey is rather simple. Males will be larger and have longer more pointed fins with very little blue on the gill cover if any and will be in dots if its present whereas the female will have splotchs on her gill cover and have less color throughout the body.

    seeing that your jd is still young yet, i'll say it's a female.

    your gold saum (along with all gt's) are rather difficult to try to sex when they are juvies, but here is some info that will help you when it gets to adult size.

    Males are generally larger, more vibrant in colour and develop a nuchal (forehead) hump with age. Males develop longer, almost extensions on their dorsal and anal fins. Females are often less brilliantly coloured and are more squat in body shape than the longer, more slender males.
