Got my tank

For several years I had a small 20 gallon fish tank. Now I finally broke down and bought a 125 gallon tank. I use to have a 55 gallon but dropped it in a move and couldn’t afford another big tank till now. But what I didn’t count on when I bought this 125 gal tank was that I needed a different type of filter system. I couldn’t pass up the deal I got on this tank though, I only paid $100. So I am leaning towards a Rena Filstar xp3 filter system. I will have to think on what kind of fish I can get that won’t kill my other fishes. A loach, a blue gourami, a placo, two barbs, and some little fish that I still can’t figure out how it got into my tank. That’s my story. If you have any suggestions how I can make my tank better befor I set it up, I’ll listen. It will probably be a month before I get to it.

Welcome.... Have fun aquascaping a tank that big :)

I have done some much reading and those 6' tanks are not easy to make look like 1 big tank... usually it comes out looking like 2 smaller tanks slammed together!

I would also add more filtration... 1 xp3 is not enough for that tank.

You can do so much with it... .You can view my 125 by clicking the link in my signature for some ideas.... this is my latest layout with this tank!

    Welcome to The Exotic Fish.

    That's a great deal for a 125 gallon tank ! With a 125 you'll probably need more than an XP3.

Oh, for fish that would work and look good in a tank like that is a school of about 6-15 Angelfish!

---Anthony I just said that about the XP3! :)

Any suggestion on what type of filter to get? It says online that the xp3 can handle up to 175 gallons. I havn't bought anything yet, so I am open to suggestions.

There really is no 1 single filter that can run that whole tank (short of a wet/dry). Depending on what you are looking to spend you would need about 3 XP3s, 1 POWERFUL wet/dry (1,500gph) with a 20-50 gallon sump, or a few Hang on Back (HOB) filters that are rated 300-400GPH....

You in total really need at minimum 2 350GPH filters, one on each end of the tank to keep the waterflow consistent in the tank.

----Guido, it is a 125 gallon tank! And unlike Discus, Angels actually move in unison sometimes!

TravisS generally you want to filter your tank 10 times per hour. That would be 1250GPH (gallons per hour). You don't have to have this amount exactly but that is what most of us aim for. The XP3 is 350GPH (without media in it) so if you got two of those hat would filter your tank 5 times an hour. I would not do less than 2 XP3's.

wow, good thing i am a patient person. I never had a tank this big and didn't know i should have that much water rotation. Looks like i have to go shopping around for a filter system now.

Is the wet/dry filter system hard to setup? I have a 20 gallon tank and have seen people create there own. Is there a web site that has a "how to" or something I can read up on, maybe a diagram.

Hi! Welcome! Your going to need to do a combination as suggested above.
This might help (some of the best on the market today):
    Rena xp4 450gph
    Eheim 2080 450gph
Eheim 2180 (comes with 500w internal heater) 450gph
    Fluval Fx5 925gph
