Many people think goldfish are good fish to keep and don't realize most of them get to be 10+ inches long.

Yea, I found out the ones I had were going to reach 12 inches...the kids "won" 11 of them from a school fair...when I went to the pet store to buy accessories from the store that was having the contests he didn't tell me that a 10 gallon tank was not sufficient...so I had all kinds of problems...I consider it a miracle the fish even survived...

I just dumped them in the tank with water and a filter and started giving them food before I knew it I had a big smelly mess on my hands and some pissed off kids...

Goldfish are also VERY messy fish. :)

Are you looking for fish that will work in a 10 gallon tank ?

Yea, I'm trying to look around, get some ideas to present to the kids...and go from there...I bought some plants...found out one will only last a month so I'm just trying to peruse fish forums so I can quit just mindlessly throwing money away...

Yeah. It'll be best to read up a bit and ask us questions before spending any more money.

Yea, I really should have did my research before buying anything when the kids bought those fish home but I was trying to keep them from dying like the last batch they won...

Fish from places like that don't normally live long because they have health problems

Yea, the ones from the latest episode lasted 2 weeks...I was told to return them...because they would grow to be 12 inches and were really pond fish...the first batch were guppies I think...about 10 that we were given in a 1 or 2 gallon tank from Petco that didn't end well at all... green mess and death of all 10 in a week...

Did PetCo sell you the 10 Guppies and the 1-2 gallon tank ?

Just for future reference. In a 1-2 gallon aquarium I would only recommend 1-2 MALE guppies (No females). That would be the max amount of fish that should be housed in that size tank.
