What are some ways to add substrate to a tank thats up and running. I will be mixing it with what is currently in the tank. Should I take the fish out, or just wash it really well and place it in there carfully? The reason I am adding new substrate is that the white crushed coral is washing out the colors of my fish, so I am going to add regular black gravel to the mix and see how it works out.

i've always rinsed and put it in carefully....it still clouds the tank for the day but it has worked well with no effects.
