I took my java moss and just tucked several pieces of it into the gravel. After it starts to grow some it attaches to the gravel and doesn't move

That's what I do too. I just take my finger and push a small piece of it in the substrate at a few spots.

I just stick them in the substrate. They will grow roots pretty quickly. It's okay for some of the stem to be slighting covered while it grows more roots.

ok. the last time i had plants, i had a plant that if i put in the gravel that peice would die and float back to the top so i just left it then the whole top half of my tank was covered about 3 inches thick with this plant. gave some to my cusin and tossed the rest. drove me crazy.

They do make plant weights. I think they're made out of lead though.

Fishing string if you want to tie it to something such as wanting a java fern to grow from a piece of driftwood. If your talking in substrate just tuck it into the substrate or plant it in a really small terra cotta pot and fill the pot with your substrate or some laterite, Actually you can even use those metal plant twists that most lfs use to bundle their loose plants.

Elodea should have roots... How much of it are you putting into the gravel, how much gravel is in the tank ?
