Yeah, stringy - hairy, same thing :)

You should be able to just clip it to what you want it to look like. There are no roots really or anything so, and it is a VERY hardy plant.

No and moving with over 200 gallons of fish tanks is not fun either (though I have not done it yet but should be doing it later this year)

dang, that might be the case when I move out. I have 50 gallons worth of fish tanks, but only one of my 20 gallons are set up, I'm going to set my 10 gallon up for fry soon thought.

Java moss is really resiliant (sp)...as lemon said you can cut it with no issues.
I currently have some growing in the tank that's sandwiched between those plastic craft sheets with the tiny squares that you can get at Wal-mart. I can't remember what they are actually supposed to be for?
But I sandwiched it and zip tied it along the edges and got some of the suction cups that Wal-mart has in the craft section (tiny ones with a metal hook) and hung it towards the surface of the tank.
I'm at the month point and it it coming out of the tiny squares quite nicely!
Down the road my intention is to make a moss wall out of them.

I would not throw it out either! Java Moss is not exactly a cheap plant (not expensive either) but I know around here it is hard to find in stores.
