I used to have such a peaceful tank till about 3 days ago. The Oscars are now acting really odd. Very lovey with each other. I thought maybe they are just friends now (you can stop laughing, okay). Then the Green Sevs have begin locking lips and fighting (I think they are fighting  ) and Barb is now a bum biter. What is this???

Please tell me it is just nothing. I really do not want any amore going on. P.S. I know I am over stocked...LOL!!

Pairing Oscars are quite interesting actually!

They swim in a "school" with the mate and flutter their fins a lot. They also may do gentle lip locking (still semi-aggressively) and they take turns in feeding time allowing the other to eat.

Males and Females are VERY hard to tell a difference (I sometimes can tell though)... Males tend to be wider and well.... uglier... they are pale in color but have more vibrant pattern... Females are VERY pretty in their red colorations but lack a sharp pattern.... they also tend to be slimmer and shorter than the males...

You know when they are truly pairing when they take turns trying to dig to the bottom of the tank (that action is making a nest)

Oscars spawn on a HORIZONTAL flat surface like a piece of slate or the bottom of the tank. You cant just set a piece of slate in there though.... you have to partially cover it so they can see it is there but they can "clean" it off...

My big O is really red and pretty. My lil O is plain and "ugly" I cannot tell who is what, but something had changed since they became "friends"

The darker one is a female.... (I know that is the one you saw the tube on) But by pattern it is a female (the stripes are not well defined)

And my best guess is that the other one is a female too.... They still could pair as quite often 2 females will pair and even spawn... just the eggs cant be fertilized, but one lays the eggs and the other "pretends" to fertilize.

It would also explain why the 2 have not killed each other (2 females or 1 female and 1 male can co-exist but NEVER 2 males)

The reason I think the other is a female too is because it has a narrow head BUT age and overall care could affect this... I would say 80% sure its a female
