a few fish would be your cheapest way.... put a heater on it and drop a betta in it! You can follow in the Filterless tank setup using the plants as a filter as mentioned on this thread - viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1658&start=0

Hmmmmm....bout the best that I can come up with would be DIY Co2 and dry ferts. Pennies on the dollar.

I'd do some easy low light plants, a few fish to fertilize, and a heater (regular water changes). A filter would defin. help also!

you know what i was told for a homemade fertilizer and you dont have to spend any money at all....cook some veggies in a pan with water and make sure it has a lid so the water dont evaperate.. when the veggies are cooked you drain the water into a bowl and wait until it cools the put it into small bottles and feed your plants with it weekly ;)

For terrestrial plants maybe, I'm not sure that would work for aquatic plants though.

I wouldn't do it in a tank with fish.
