Is there a way to make your own piece of driftwood? If so, how would you go about making it?

You could try using a piece of dead wood and power washing it. Maybe ?

adding to what anthony said, if you do find yourself some dead wood just make sure it's not ceder or from a sap producing tree like pine/evergreen, there's natural chemical in this type of wood that can be toxic to aquarium fish.
