    You can use tap water.

The bacteria you're talking about is probably the bacteria that lives in the tank once it's cycled.

Your tank shouldn't have ammonia, nitrites or nitrates in it since there are no fish. As soon as you add fish, it will begin to cycle and all of those will appear.

    ph 8.4
    amonnia 0
    nitrite 0
    nitrate no more than 10ppm.

you can use tap water but you must let it sit for a couple of day to become distilled or you can get an ro/di system to skip all that.....

if your thinking of fish only tank then it won't be so bad to set up or your pocket....

if you want to do a fowlr meaning fish and live rock then you'll need to make sure your water is in top shape to keep the bacteria and critters alive.....

if your going for a reef tank then your looking at alot of money and equiptment to keep it going the right way......

there's alot of info on the net to get you going the right way....your going to have to read, read and read more.

Keep in mind saltwater fish are generally much less tolerant to water changes than freshwater fish.

Oh sweet! Maybe if/when I go up there I can contact you about some LR :D I'm in desperate need of some, I'm pretty sure the stuff I bought from my LFS awhile back was horrible, they ripped me off bad there, good thing I'm smart now.
