    KNIFEFISH AND ELECTRIC EELS

    General:
With the exception of a single Central American species, the more than 100 species, which belong to the families Eigenmanniidae, Apteronotidae, and others, are found in South America.

    Biology:
Most species are specialized predators of insect larvae and occur in widely varying biotopes.
Almost no Gymnotiformes practice parental care.

    Specifics:
Like the elephant noses, electric eels and some knifefish have electric organs that generate discharges used for communication with one another and for orientation.

Note> A male Black Ghost knifefish can reach a length of 20 inches.
