They require a 20+ gallon tank and should be kept in a group of 3+.

they also require a "soft" substrate, that is one without sharp edges, as they like to dig and root around in it.

Sand would be the best. They're peaceful so they should be fine.

they are fine with most community fish, they should not be kept with loaches of the botia family, as they are to aggressive and "mouthy" for the kuhlies. Kuhlies like to bury themselves in the sand and hang out buried or hiding under things for most of the day.

yeah, barbs, tetras, gouramis, your frog (depending on how big it is), and so on. With that 30L you have a ton of possibilities.

They are not peaceful. They are typical fin nippers and need to be kept in larger groups. I wouldn't do less than 5 of the tiger barbs. If you have other truly peaceful fish in the tank I wouldn't add those guys.

I never claimed that barbs were peaceful. Simply stated the fact that they would be fine with a kuhli loach
