Does anyone know anything about keeping African Cichlids native to Lake Victoria. Are the water parameters the same as mbunas, what substrate would be the best, do they also enjoy a rocky tank with lots of hides? If you are very familiar with the keeping of these species I will be keeping a breeding trio kyoga flamebacks and I welcome any species specific advice!

Generally the pH needs to neutral to slightly hard. Lake Victoria has a varied habitat, from rocky to swamp like. I'd just go with a rocky setup with crushed coral substrate.

Hello, this is my first post...but I do keep Victorians. I currently have Xystichromis sp. Kyoga Flamebacks, Xystichromis phytophagus, Neochromis Omnicaeruleus, Astatotilapia latifasciatia, Paralabidochromis chromogynos, and I'm growing out some Mbipia Lutea. I'm no expert, but I really enjoy the Vics.

Ph should be what you would keep mbuna at, somewhere around 8 would be good, although Vics are fairly forgiving. Some rocks would be good, but make sure to leave some open water and sand for swimming...they are out more than they hide, at least my colony of Kyoga Flamebacks. They are easily bullied fish, and they need to be the dominant in the tank to show colors, and possibly to breed.

By now I'm sure you have these fish, how are they doing?

Is anyone else keeping Lake Victoria Cichlids?

    My list right now is:
    Xystichromis sp Kyoga Flamebacks
    Xystichromis phytophagus
    Astatotilipia Latifasciata
    Paralabidochromis Chromogynos
    Neochromis Omnicaeruleus
    Mbipia Lutea

I'd love to compare notes on keeping these species.
