This is my midas cichlid, Kedros. I believe it is a male because its dorsal fin is pointy and long. Its 6" and has no bump on its head yet, but it has a larger forehead and looks like it could sprout a bump someday.

Midas are hard to find where I live. Petsmart has fish labeled midas cichlids, but they look like red devils to me. I will ask them today if they can provide documentation on the exact species. As far as this guy goes, I drove 75 miles through the rain to a tiny fish shop to get him approximately a month ago. I've looked for others through craigslist but ended up not wanting to go to this stranger's house who had answered my ad. He had a mated pair so I'm sure he'd want a lot for them. I could order one from a local fish shop but they asked $80 for the last one they had and won't get another midas unless its ordered from somebody because they are "too aggressive" and they don't like to deal with them. I lucked out and got Kedros for $20 by taking a long long drive. He was with a large oscar tankmate, but I didn't get the oscar.

I'm not sure the best food for him for coloration. I give him Hikari Gold as a staple and have also given him freeze-dried shrimp, bloodworms, krill, peas. I tried giving him a tiny piece of chopped strawberry one day and he spit it out. I know he's not a full carnivore so I'm worried he is getting too much meat. His coloration has improved much since I got him though and he's growing well minus a head bump.

These are all from his first few days with me. I got new pictures today but it will be awhile before I have time to upload them all to photobucket.

He looks nice. I'm not sure if he's full carnivore but If he isnt like you said you should try to feed it non-meat more. He'll eventually eat it :) It's good your using variaty already :)

real nice. i use the hikari gold and nutrafin max for my O's & jd . just try giving him different kinds of fruits/veggies and he'll let ya know what he's got a taste for. my tiger o will eat banana, others won't. try cucumber (no skin/seeds), white/green grapes (no skin). hope this helps.

I never even thought of banana. I guess a South American fish would eat a South American fruit. I'll try next time I have bananas.

you figure in the wild they'd eat about anything that hits the water.

Last night he was attacking my ferret when the ferret walked past the tank. This is the first time I've seen him get territorial since I got him. Yippee.

I like it because to me it says he has staked a claim in that territory. He must be happy with the rocks and caves and such that I gave him if he wants to defend the area. Fighting for a cichlid means "this is my home and I'm not the one that's leaving, you are"

Well said King !! it's that kind of demeanor (IMO) that makes them an attractive and very interesting fish family.

That's why he's King Kedros. I like to think he has some tolerance for the bringer of food though ;)

Another reason I like to see his behavior is its a sign of maturing. Soon he could have a female and not be alone at all.
