Today right after I finished feeding my PJ cardinal in my 10 gallon nano, I noticed this guy coming out of the live rock. I had seen a couple smaller ones in here before, but this guy is huge! I guess I have a pet bristle worm as well as my pj cardinal in this tank now, probably came out to eat some brine shrimp....definitely goes to show ya why you should wear gloves while handling live rock....ya never know what might be lurking in those rocks.

I found this article that could help NoctuVide?

    <a class="postlink" href="http://www.netpets.com/fish/reference/reefref/bristle.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.netpets.com/fish/reference/r ... istle.html</a>

It seems to go into what Anthony was talking about but MUCH ore in depth than a forum would allow..... Figured you may be interested in it.

I found the red light at night to be cool! (too bad I dont keep a salt tank)

Thanks! I came across a very similar page when I was searching on the net. The only thing I need to figure out is what type of container to use. I was thinking of grabbing a deli container and trying that out. As for your question lilysmomma, they are a marine worm that have bristles covering their body that can harm your fish, eat corals in a reef setup, and if you're not wearing gloves when maintaining your tank can sting you. Smaller ones usually aren't a problem, and are actually a pretty good part of the cleanup crew, but when they get larger, you'll have issues with them. They are introduced into your tank on live rock, and most of the time you'll have no idea you have them untill you either see them at night, or the occasional lights on sighting. I kind of "lucked out" in seeing it when the lights were on, I just had no idea that I had one this big in there.

lol it freaks my girlfriend out that it's in that tank, just kind of lurking. I told her "you think that's bad, wait until we see what shows up when we setup the 90 gallon!" The real scary part is the fact that there are things that come in on live rock that can actually hurt you! Quite a difference from freshwater! Not only the bristle worms, but you can (and 99% of the time will) end up with aiptasia which can sting you. Then there are the mantis shrimp, which aren't quite as common, but they do show up once in a while.

Yeah. And the bigger the tank gets the more live rock you will need the more change there is that something nasty will come up. I'm happy that i just got snails from my plants :) Though i'd be scared to put my hand in there I actually like him just a little xD

you can end up with snails on live rock as well. I've seen at least 3 really small ones, as well as a small sea slug type thing. lol Always something new to see. I can't wait till I get my 90 going!

I dont know what everyone else wrote cause I'm kind of in a hurry but I had a huge bristle worm problem because I got a whole bunch of rock second hand. Anyway this guy basically had given up on his tank and left it to die and then took it apart and gave it to me and there were bristle worms everywhere! I picked up a coral banded shrimp and he took care of it all. It doesn't hurt that he's great looking either.

Hey I'm new to this site but someone told me to come here cause I showed them pictures of bristle worms I have in my tank. Their not quite that big but I've been trying to get them out with gloves and tweezers. I have a lot and I have gotten 2 out... So it's pretty time consuming. haha. Good Luck!

They make bristleworm traps. I'm not sure how well they work though.

Wow I don't think I have any that big... Well that I can see! I spend a lot of time just looking for new things, so I figured I would have found some really big ones by now.

hers were so big they wouldn't fit in the bristle worm traps... We would go in there at night and be very carful cause they retrack into the rock like a bolt of lightning.. she was scared of em lol.. i would get these long pliar type thongs and she held a light just enough for me to see and i would grab him as close the the rock as i could get and pull him out.

Shrimp work great for bait by the way.
