Please keep in mind that this is a work in progress! Open to all advice and tips. The window has been covered that is behind the tank and a black background has been added to the tank since I took the pictures.

nice! i think a couple of rocks stacked up on the right side would give it a nice pop. and maybe some riccia or java around the bottom rock.
what type of lighting do you have?

    Odyssea 96w daylight/actinite bulb.

Thanks for the suggestion about the rocks, I was thinking something along those lines, but I am going to take my time, I hastily did my 55 gallon and am not that happy with it. Where is a good place to get rocks or slates, could you use rose quartz in an aquarium?

perfect lighting, those plants are going to be happy!
about the rock, i'm not sure about rose quartz, i was thinking of
like a lava rock...it's pourous and will hold oxygen in if you add an airstone
behind them, also it's a little more natural looking and give a good contrast with the plants since it's dark.

I will have to look into that, the only lava rock that I have seen around here is white or a darker red/orange color and I never really liked any of the pieces I saw because they all looked like they were "molded", basically unnatural. I was thinking of stacking a slate or other darker rock with some clear and rose quartz mixed in.

Haha, I just ordered some off of ebay, I might move the holey rock from my 55 gallon over to the 40 and make this my reason to redo my cichlids tank!

I took my holey rock out of the 55 and placed it in this tank, you were right the rock really makes the tank "pop!" I have planted a java fern in a conventiently placed indention on the top of the rock and stuck an anubias nana in a hole on the side of the rock.

Looks good. Is it cloudy because you stirred up the substrate ?

Yeah, but I still cannot get that polished shine that the water in my tanks usually has. I figure it will get back to normal over time, water changes, and substrate vacuuming.
