    NANDIDS

    General:
The few species of this geologically ancient perchlike family live in South America, Africa, and Asia.

    Biology:
Some species, including the leaf fish, practice parental care: The males devotedly care for the eggs that have been laid and for the hatching larvae until they are free-swimming.
All the species are predators of other fish.
Their leaflike camoflage allows them to sneak up on their prey and suck it into their protractile mouths all at once.

Note>Leaf fish mimic dead leaves to perfection.
