    What a nightmare.

    <a class="postlink" href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/27/AR2009052701734.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 01734.html</a>

According to a keeper I saw on TV, "this was equipment that worked fine for seventeen years"
Kind of a lesson to us all, isn't it? We have hardware that works 24/7 keeping our fishes healthy. And sometimes it does crash, but wouldn't you too? After 40 years in the hobby (when I started, all I'd ever seen were box filters, but then, I was seven), I've gotten to the point where I have a bunch of Emperors sitting in the hall closet, ready to pop on a tank in an emergency. Same for air pumps and airstones.
When we had the flood here, and the power was out , I was stuck in Charlottesville, due to washed-out roads. My hubby used a bicycle pump to keep air going to the tanks. (bless his heart) We bought a generator after that, and can now rotate between the fridge, freezer and aquariums.
Anyway, with storm season coming to the central VA area, it's good to explore your options.
The best fish store in C'ville closed after a bad hurricane because he lost most of his stock, and I miss that place terribly. The New York Times ran a wonderful article about four years back about an LFS in the City that managed to keep most of its stock alive during a similar incident. If anybody has the time and energy to grub that up, it'd be a help to all of us, I think.

Seems to me that someone wasn't keeping an eye on the water quality like they should have been.

I find that hard to believe. In my experience it's pretty easy to tell when oxygen levels are low.

True, but oxygen quality can crash in very little time, and FW rays are super-sensitive.

That really sucks. I loved that exhibit. I always wondered how they kept the arrawonas from jumping out. Same goes for those massive arapaimas in the other display. could you imagine one of those monsters flopping around on the ground?!?
