Before I can get the tank going I need a new heater and a new filter system. I was thinking either the Penguin Bio-Wheel 200 or the 350. This is on a 29g tank so the circulation would be almost 7 time a hour with the 200 and over 12 times with the 350. The price inst a issue but the length of the 350 might be. Any thoughts on that? For the heater I was looking at the Fluval "E" Electronic Heater - 300W. As I get older its harder to see stuff heh, this has a digital display and can be set within .5 of the temp you desire. Has anyone used, have or herd of this one? It seems expensive for a heater but if it does what it says it can and I can read it easily then price doesnt matter (within reason of course). I still need to look into some lighting, so more questions will come with that but I need to know what type of plants I want first. Thank you for the replys.

You want to put a 300 watt heater in a 29 gallon tank ? They are rather new but from what I've heard they're comparable to the Visi-Therm Stealth.

I'm not crazy about the Penguin Bio Wheel filters anymore. When they were first released sure they were great. They're still good but personally if money isn't an issue I'd get a smaller canister filter like a Rena XP1.

The only thing I would be worried about would be fitting the large intake of the biowheel, and the large 300w heater which is more than overkill imo.

Ok, I just figured with a larger heater it would bring the temp up quicker from a water change. I dont have any space for a canister filter or I would do the whole canister/in-line heater thing. The tank sits on a open bottom cabinet so I there is no room to hide anything. :(

When doing water changes you will want to use water as close to the temp in the tank as possible. Not doing this will cause a lot of stress to the fish.

I still recommend the AquaClear filters. They're the only HOB filter I use.

Oh yeah with out a doubt I dont just turn the tap on and fill up a bucket. I will look into the aquaclear is there a siz that I should look for? I need something in the 300gph... I can look too heh. So what size heater then, this tank was a kit so im not sure what was in it I just know it was from Topfin and from what I am reading that stuff is junk. The only thing that will be left from Topfin will be the tank lol. Probably better that way.

Just looked it up, would appear the AquaClear 70 (300) Power Filter would be a good fit says up to 100g tank but for volume a 30g.

Nelson says the AquaClear 70 doesn't fit all tanks so I'd go with the 110 version (what I always use). It's 500GPH without media (as all GPH ratings are).

    For a 29 gallon tank I would do about a 100-150watt heater.

Ok, so that would be about 17 cycles per hours seems a bit extreame, would the current be a issue at that point? Keep in mind it will be for puffers. Now that I think about it that might be better, they are river dwelling puffers... Any thoughts?

I have a AC 110 on my 20 gallon upstairs that I had my Endler's in before I moved them down into the 30 long. They were fine in it. It creates more of a surface movement than a huge flow in the tank itself. I think it'd be perfectly fine.

I ended up getting a aquaclear 70, they told me at my lfs that if it didnt fit I couuld bring it back for a small stocking fee. I was $30 cheeoper than the 110 so I figured I would give it a shot. It fits fine and I got a 100w heater also, I looked into the req's for the gallon/temp to get it over 12 degrees and a 100 or 150 would be good for the tank. I have also found the light fixture I want its cheeper than online ( I was shocked too ), so now I just need to see if they can order the fish. They have a large selection of plants there also so this lfs might get a lot of my money in the coming years heh. I would rather buy from them then online anyhow, always have liked helping the little guy. :)
