I've been working in pet shops for the last six years, so setting up a fish tank isn't new for me, but I am having a lot of trouble with this one for some reason.

I have a 65 gallon corner tank and I just got an Eheim 2213 for it. It's a canister with the double-tap connectors on the intake and outflow. It's not brand-new, but the previous owner took very good care of it. I disassembled her tank for her so I know the thing was working. It's been sitting unused for about a month.

I plug it in and the impeller just grinds and never starts to suck. It's not that god-awful loud grinding. It sounds like it is working fine. I filled it with water and got the air bubbles out of the tubing, made sure the double-taps were open, but it's still not working. It's been sitting like that for a few hours now and hasn't started to flow.

As far as I can tell, there is no debris or broken pieces, or anything like that. I tried sucking on the hoses to prime the filter, and water will come out the outflow, but it doesn't seem to be helping.

    Any tips? Thanks.

I have an xp4, not experienced in Eheims...but if their isn't anything jamming the impeller (ie. substrate usually) and theirs no Air pockets in the line then all I am left with guessing would be the motor.

Can you unseat the impeller and shine a "beam" light to make sure nothings there? Maybe use a shopvac since you can suck water with them if theirs any in it at the time.

Is there access to the motor and does it come unseated...that would be my next thing (thinking the motors going and that's causing the impeller to not run/spin properly)?

    Any rings/bushings that need replaced?

<--knows with canisters their isn't much to go wrong, besides the motor.impeller.and simple things like the o-rings

    Re: Problem with Eheim 2213

Thanks for your answers! It turns out that the double-tap connectors were open, but placed on the wrong tubes. Whoops!

I got it all sorted out that same night, but I don't get much internet time so I didn't get a chance to thank you until now. But I have a new problem which I will be posting about shortly. ^^
