    Filter Troubleshooting
So I have a question. I noticed this morning my HOB filter is making an annoying rattling noise. I took it off, cleaned it, put it back together and it still made the same noise. So I took it off again, checked for any problems, and put it back together and it still is making the same noise.

It's a MarineLand Penguin filter. It's been doing fine so far but I don't know what it's problem is now.

    Any ideas?

The pump wheel seems to be loose.... shake the intake tube while it is running, pull it up and push it back down...

Either that or you have some sand in it that you did not get cleaned out well...

yup yup, had the same problem not too long ago...microscopic piece of substrate got under where the impeller sits and made it rattle to heck and back. Ended up having to use a sish-ka-bob (sp) stick to get it out because it was soo tiny and wedged.

Other than that I'm sure you have enough water covering the intake?

Hey guys! Thanks for the advice. I think it was sand too because after the settling of the second cleaning it's died down a lot. There is a slight grumble coming from it that isn't normal but definitely not as bad as before. If it doesn't go away by tonight I will do a thorough inspection to see if there is just a grain of sand in there.

Here's a trouble shooting manual for the emperor 400 ...similar to the penguins, but what's better is the toll free number to contact them. I'm sure Penguin would also have the 1yr. guarantee where you can return it to the store/or manufacture with proof of purchase. Darn, how I wish I saved the receipt for the emperors (1 is possibly a defect). http://www.marineandreef.com/v/vspfiles/pdf/emperor_manual.pdf
