Pics of my new Bolivian Ram. He's quite the interesting little guy. Because they are more closely related to the Geophagus Cichlids, rather than just grab food like my GBR, he picks at food on the bottom. Definitely not quite as colorful as the GBR, but still very nice looking.

i think so, he isn't that big yet, probably around 1.5" or so. From what I was reading about them they get larger than GBRs as well, around 4"

NoctuVide, that's a good-looking fish you have there! I honestly think the Bolivians are every bit as attractive as the GBRs, in their own understated way. I saw some GBRs at the LFS (Perfect Pets to those from around here) the other day, and they were quite fat and round. They looked a little bloated to me, but a guy who knows about them came into the store and said that is the wild-caught look. He said the elongated look is more of a hobby thing.
I didn't get exactly what he meant.
Ultimately I don't think the rams I saw (all males) are going to do well. They looked lousy, and kept languishing on the bottom.

GBR's are usually a lot harder to take care. I've kind of lucked out with mine and he's still very healthy. He has a much rounder appearance than my bolivian but that could also be because the gbr is older. I love the ram personalities. Other than the rams, I've never owned any other cichlids, so I wonder if they are very similar personality wise.

lol yea, he is my favorite fish so I always make sure he gets fed first then worry about the others after. I know how I am, and if most cichlids are like rams, I'd end up getting hooked to them, and want to turn the 90gallon into a cichlid tank instead of a reef tank lol

I'm setting up a 75 gallon SA theme tank which will be mostly catfish.
I'm thinking of a pair of rams. I've already got a half coconut shell cave for them, with Java moss growing on it.

I think the Bolivians would be worth a try.

Does anyone know anything about Colombian rams?

maybe you were looking at the balloon belly blue rams, they look like a genetic defect that was bred out, like albino, saw some at my lfs, not very attractive to me tho

kind of like balloon belly mollys and gouramis. I agree, not an attractive look at all. A fish that looks like it's either deformed, has some sort of bloat, or a form of dropsy really doesn't seem like it would actually sell that well.

You're right. I went back a couple days later and the tank was labeled, "Balloon Rams $9.99."

I asked about Colombian rams earlier, but I've found out that Colombians are the same as GBRs, which come from Colombia and Venezuela. [bfish]
