Came home from work today and found ich covering my fish in my 55 community tank. This is the 2nd time I've dealt with this plague and this time I'm going to try the heat method rather than medication. It'll be interesting to see if all my fish make it through this time. The last time I used some garbage meds and killed off most of my fish. I have a powerhead near the surface so that plus the HOB filter plus the bubble strip should cause more than enough surface agitation for gas exchange with the raised temp... we'll see what happens

Good luck. I've had an ich outbreak twice in my freshwater keeping years and both time I've used heat to get rid of it without losing any fish.

What's the best length of time that you have found that works the best to keep the temp that high?

Last time I purchased 2 fish with ich I treated them with heat only for about 7 days.

Sorry to hear that, hopefully tweaking the temp a bit as Anthony suggested and your "troubles" will resolve.
    Keep us updated!

Just recently I bought a Spotted gar. and of course you need to feed them live feeders. Well I got feeders and put them in a 10 gallon tank. I put 5 in the tank an hour later I come to find that both the 55g and the 10g tanks fish had ick. I learned that loaches really do not do good with meds so hopefully this tempature treatment will be fine.

    [*]ICH
Symptoms: Small white spots on fins. Eventually the spots will cover much of the body. Fish will scratch and become listless.
Solution: Ich is a common parasite of fish. When fish are chilled or moved they become more susceptible. Ich is easy to cure if you treat daily for at least 3 days. Use Quick Cure. To speed the cure raise the temperature to 80 degrees.

just let them know how much salt to add when they turn up the heat. everyone learns from talking to others and from their own experiences. what work for some might not work for others.

    how this

You do not have to add salt when treating with heat. Salt should not be used at times depending on what fish are in the tank.
