Do you have a large tank ?

You'll need one because these fish can grow up to 12" in length (Red-Bellies).

Re: what do i need to know about these fish?

alright some one that might actually get alone with me..

First off what state you live in?

It is suggested that you do not keep one by it self, its better to keep 3 or more. and suggested about 20 gallons per fish.

second be prepaired to do alot of water changes . the ammonia levels go out the roof.

don'thave bright lights on them get the lowest watt you can find, they'll need a good current, so a good power head is good.

they don't like for you to watch them eat they are actually very shy fish.

so have them some cover such as fake plants or stumps, nothing sharp in the tank cause they willl... injure them selves cause they dart off everywhere.

    I have 5 rb's in a 100 gallon, with 2 cascade 1200's, and a korala 3.

keep the temp around 80, and use a titanium heater, cause they'll break a glass one.

allthisis my opinion and what i've found out... there are many pages that come up on google if you do a search.

    what else you wanna know

if you got a 150, i 'd get about 7, they seem to do better with larger number, they act more natural. Your lighting should be fine, they are just sensitive to light, just making sure you ain't got lights for things such as corals or metal hylids... I added some BLACK water to mine to cut down on the brightness.

mine have never bit me..(while in the tank) they go to the other side of the tank.. ;) I wouldn't take them out to just put a plant in.. they will probably eat whatever plant you put in there. just so you know... i don't have live plants in mine, except some moss balls, i don't know what is safe and not safe for them. you may want to google that.
