    Pleco question

I have a 10 gallon tank that is currently cycling with no fish (yet). I plan on adding fish in the next couple of days. How long should I wait to introduce a pleco?

Wait until you have enough algae in the tank or you can supplement his diet with algae tabs.

2nd and 3rd the previous given information...if you can't wait until you have/produce algae naturally then go with Algae supplements such as Hikari Algae wafers.

I just want to add, that a pleco, espically a common pleco can reach up to 2 feet in length. An upgrade in tank size will be in your future if you buy a pleco for a 10g tank.

Good catch Amante...unless its a smaller breed such as a bristlenose or clown pleco--OR--a corydoras (although not a pleco..for some reason I noticed in reading up others have referred to them as miniature plecos?).

Never heard them called that. But cories or even otos would be a great choice for a smaller size tank.

    Re: Pleco question.

Time out! A pleco in a 10g? Wow...only a BN (Bristle Nose) will work in this scenario. Ottos will be the best choice here.

    Re: Pleco question.

I agree with this. I have had my pleco in a 55 gallon tank and he is over 6 years old. He is about 12 inches long. You definitely want to consider that before putting a pleco in a 10 gallon tank.

    Re: Pleco question.

Technically Otos ARE Plecos.... they are a family of fish called the Loricariidae. The "Common Pleco" is actually just one of hundreds of these catfish.

Basically that family is represented by catfish with spiny armor and a bottom facing sucker-like mouth.

Agreed, a common Pleco will not work in a 10.... there are more than just Bristle Nose and Otos that will work, BUT they are much rarer and of course more expensive. Nonetheless I would still put NO MORE than 1 of any of the other Loricariidaes other than the Oto!

    Re: Pleco question.

    ok brainiac! :)

yes, they are all in the same family as apples and oranges are both fruits. However, we call pleco's ... pleco's and otos...well....otos or oto catfish. We don't call pleco's ... pleco catfish now do we? hmmmmmm.
    :)

be carefull....i'm in a wacky mood today...and no...no wacky weed is the cause.

    Re: Pleco question.

If you really want a pleco you could get a clown pleco. They only grow to about 4 inches. Clown plecos will need some driftwood in the tank to munch on. Actually I read that all plecos can benefit from occasionally chomping on some driftwood.
