    question about sharks.
I was at a pet store yesterday and i was looking at the fish. well they had some sharks, now i forgot what the names where, but they had wrote on the tank that 1 could fit in a 29 gal. I wanted to know if this was right or not. as most of the time its not.

My guess is that a 29 would be too short and too tall.... I would think a 30L would be better... I could be wrong though as I am not a shark specialist and never had any (nor wanted any)

depends on what kind of "sharks". Most grow to be around a foot long if not longer.

Every time i ever see bala sharks at the pet store there are usually about 30 of them in a little 20 gallon tank. IMO any tank bigger than that is a step up for the poor things. (screw petco). A friend of mine has 3 of them in a 55 gallon that are pretty old and they are around 6". And i dont want to hear anyone say "That tank is too small" they have been in the tank for quite a few years and are as happy as can be.

I've never seen them that big in an aquarium. If they do get that big he'll get a bigger setup, but i see that taking awhile.

    Bala Shark?
    awww.fishlore.com_Pictures_Profiles_bala_shark.jpg
If so, information from that site I got the picture from:

"Also known as the Silver Shark, the Bala Shark is a growing favorite among tropical fish hobbyists. This tropical fish isn't a shark at all though. It belongs in the Cyprinidae family. They are named sharks because of their appearance and the shape of their dorsal fin. These "sharks" require large tanks because of their potential adult size of 13 inches. They are mostly peaceful but may eat smaller fish such as neon tetras when they reach a large enough size.

Also, be warned that Balas (Silver Sharks) are excellent jumpers. Have a hood on your aquarium to prevent your Silver Shark from leaping to its death. They are very fast swimmers and will dart around your aquarium very quickly. Be sure you don't have any sharp objects in your aquarium that could injure your fish.

They are not recommended for the beginner because of their large tank requirements.

These freshwater sharks (not really sharks) will eat most types of fish food including vitamin enriched flake foods, pellets, frozen, freeze dried and definitely live foods with the key being a varied diet. They sometimes make a clicking noise while eating."

Try starting them in the big aquarium and watch them grow.
