Looking at some Rams at the LFS. I really like the color on these guys. I have no experience with these fish so would love to hear from some of you who keep these fish. Whats the minimum tank size? What other fish mix well with these guys? What should my water level's be?

I've kept one before. The LFS guy told me that it would be okay, tested my water and everything. A few days later he died. Took it back and another employee tested my water and said it wasn't sufficient enough for them.

And after extensive reading, they're like a cheaper Discus. They need PRISTINE water conditions. Really peaceful and beautiful fish though.

    Re: Ram Cichlids

I would love to give them a try. the tank I want to put them in is a 20 long. Currently has one small Angel, 2 Glolight's and a school of neons. I'm gonna take a water sample tomorrow. LFS guarantee's fish for 10 days so i'm sure they won't sell them to me if my water isn't good enough... One of the is orange... I've never seen one that color. I will post pics if I pick it up tomorrow.

It could also be the Golden Ram too. Both of the variations of Ram are amazing to see.

I got a German Blue Ram. I got a male and i've had him for 2 days now. He looked stressed at first but when I put food in the tank he perked right up! I'm going this week to get a female blue ram and two Gold Rams. Very cool fish!

Their awesome! I've seen them a million times in the store and haven't paid much attention to them. I'm gonna put 3 or four more in my 20 long... From the reading i've done they will take care of their fry and have a ton of them!!!

    Re: Ram Cichlids

I noticed too that GBRs are VERY picky about water. Actually I had several die in the tank with my Discus.

Turned out they are VERY aggressive and VERY stupid at the same time. They were attacking my Discus and the Discus were getting irritated and whacking them across the tank with their tail. Needless to say I dont keep them anymore even though they are some of the more attractive smaller fish....

    Re: Ram Cichlids

I have mine in with an Angelfish and a school of Neons. I have two other tanks in the house that I can move the Neons to if need be. I'm pretty good with water changes on my 20 long so hopefully I can keep this guy alive.

I did not have problems with the Rams attacking the Tetras.... they actually attacked the LARGEST Discus in my tank.

    Re: Ram Cichlids

Thats crazy... I only have one right now. Kind of shy until I put food in the tank. I'm gonna buy a few more this week when they get them in. Hopefully they will be more social when there are more in there.

Mine is still alive this morning. Really shy still and stresses out easily but still alive. Hopefully a few more rams will make him more social.
