When these guys mature they are EXTREMELY AGGRESSIVE. With their maximum size of about 16" they will likely kill most fish in his tank. These guys are commonly called "Wet Pets" because they are best kept in a 75+ gallon tank alone.

    Re: red devil

I have just bread red devils and yes, extremely aggressive. Mine can't even swim in the same water because one will kill the other. Males get between 11 and 15" inches generally while females stay between 8 and 10 inches. Most people get the misconception that they can live with other fish because at 5", it hasn't been too bad with equal sized fish, but its been my experience that somewhere between 5 & 6 inches, they become monsters and become extremely territorial and will hunt anything in the tank down (If smaller then a 90 gallon) especially the male. They are fun though, very interesting attitude, as long as they don't take a chunk from your skin when your performing a waterchange
My advice would be, a female would be a great 55-75 gallon wet pet, a male would need a 90 gallon as a wet pet, and a pair would be great in a 125 gallon or larger. But be warned, very bi-polar and will seem just fine with tankmates for a while, then you wake up to a holocaust one morning with just the devil staring at you, hence the red devil name ;)

You can house them with Butti,Trimac,Dovi,Managuense,Freddi,Green Terror,Festae,Flowerhorn. I had a Green Terror once that used to Own Red Devils.

I guess those one in a million GT's do exist, but a 7 inch fish can only own a devil for so long, eventually size will win any battle. It's easy to say a mature GT can beat up a young RD, but a mature GT will never beat up a mature 10-14" RD, especially a male no matter how much steroids you pump in it... :)
And if you plan to house it with a jag, dovii, or a butter you better make sure you have a ton of swim space because one or the other will need that.

You know Jags get about 14" right? The festae is no slouch either. Good luck with that in the longterm ;)

    Re: red devil

    I love my red devil!
never have i had or met a fish with so much personality.
when I eat a meal at the dinner table she will thrash around the tank because no-one is paying her attention, the moment you look at her she calms down straight away.
and when she is hungry she will jump out of the water to hit the lid and will keep doing so until someone feeds her.

a great solitary fish, unfortunately they are a very angry fish that will put up with a pleco for a year then decide to rip all its fins off in the night.

    Re: red devil

the level of aggression will depend on the individual fish and tank mates should be chosen wisely. The will need to be aggressive themselves and you will need some space that will be the key. I have kept and breed many Devils over the years. I have kept them with a verity of oddballs and CA cichlid space and habitat was always the key factor. Some though will just be very nasty and have to be by them selves if you want to get the most out of your large tank.
