I have been keeping Parrots off and on for about 12 years now, and I always thought they were a cross breed between a Red Devil and a Gold Severum.

Recently, caused by the Flowerhorn, Electric Blue Dempsey, and Texas Red Cichlid popularity, the question comes up again.

Is the Parrot a cross breed or a Genetic mutation? Can these species breed? And is there any visual sex differences?

I know they are dying them and selling them as Jelly beans, and Bloods.

Hoplarchus psittacus is the original Cichlid called a Parrot Fish or Cichlid. What you commonly see in pet stores is either called Parrot Cichlid or Blood Parrot Cichlid. This fish is a hybrid and it's origin is unknown. That being said they can breed with each other, although most spawns are not successful.

I was told when I had them they are a man made fish and that they WERE the result of a cross breeding between a South American cichlid, likely the severum (Heros severus) and a Central American cichlid, likely the midas cichlid (Amphilophus citrinellus) or the red devil (Amphilophus labiatus).

yes that is true they are a man made fish, hybred. cross from a red devil and a severum. But the so called jelly beans is a cross from reddevils and pink convict. all is said, the after math came the flowerhorns.

A female blood parrot and a male convict also produce what is called jellybeans. Jellybeans are often mistaken for the dyed parrots but those are called "bubblegums." Those we do not want to buy to stop the practice of dying.
