I have a good size striped rapheal that isn't looking good. His white stripes have a red tint to them all of a sudden and he was at the top of the tank under a piece of drift wood(which i've never seen him that high in the tank before). All the other fish (rainbows and upside down cat) all look great and appear to be behaving fine. Any suggestions on what this might be?

Ammonia HAS to be at 0. It can cause red lines/marks on fish. Is it possible you have a dead fish in the tank ? Is there excess food in the tank ?

I do want to get rid of him, but not this way! Him, sand, and filters don't get along to well. Have gone thru FOUR filters in the last 10 days! Love the sand more then him so he needs to go.

Some fist are more sensitive to ammonia than others. It's possible when you messed with the sand there was a pocket of decaying food in there that put ammonia into the tank.

Agreed.... Sand is notorious for that. Also I second that some fish are more sensitive than others when it comes to water quality.... when 1 shows, it may only be a matter of time before others show.

Well my Rainbows are dropping like flies! Found one dead when I got home from work tonight. So I checked to make sure all others were good. My favorite Turquoise Rainbow was swimming at 630 now he is dead! Check all the parameters and everything is good! I added driftwood about a week ago. Could that have something to do with it?

    Re: Striped Rapheal

Your ammonia is at 0 now ?

Where did you get the driftwood ? Did you boil/bake it before placing it into the tank ?

well the ammonia is at 0 and he is not doing well at all. his stripes are almost red instead of white. it seems like he is having a hard time breathing. all the other fish look good.

    Re: Striped Rapheal

That could be why... Test strips can be very inaccurate.

I was just reading that I shouldn't put aquarium salt in with scaleless catfish. Could this be this guys problem?

    Re: Striped Rapheal

Yes. Do several 50% water changes to remove the salt.
