So, my landlord has a salt tank and I was down there helping him with it and just talking about it etc. He told me that he would give me everything I need to convert one of my tanks to a reef tank! He said he has lights, heater, powerheads, etc. I am thinking about taking him up on the offer and joining you salty b*st*rds on the dark side of the moon.

I have no idea, maybe my 75 "show" tank, its taller than it is wide which might cause problems with light penetrating all the way to the bottom, but I also was thinking about the 55. It all depends on how long/powerful the lights are I guess.

how tall is it? i would say if it's taller than your going to have to go with an island in the middle style with your live rock, which is a nice look i might add!
that way depending on the lighting your going to get, you can put the corals that need more lighting on top and the others going down to the bottom......i wouldn't recommend anything taller than 32" unless your going to have some metal halides that are at least 400 watts so they can penetrate to the bottom.....if it's shorter than 32'' you can go with a pr. of 250 watt. halides and some actinics to show off color.

that's perfect!! if you get a 36" long light fixture with 2x150 mh and actinics built together you should be all set......i have a 72 bow which i believe is 26'' tall with 2x150 mh's 20,000k's and i have not had a problem with corals at all, but i must add that i am planning on buying 250w.mh's with actinics soon so i can get more growth out of my corals.....

I will be using only what is given to me for free, I am really against saltwater tanks, and only going to try this since I have to put little to no money into getting things started. I have no idea why the idea of a salt tank seems so appauling to me, but maybe my mood will change once I start putting things together.
