imo it doesn't really matter...when I had mine I did the deep sand bed with several different layers.

I stuck the gid plants in there cuz I got tired of staring at nothing while it was cycling.

I was thinking the idea of a skimmer I kind of ran in too and it's Coralife Super Skimmer Needle Wheel Protein Skimmer 125 Gallon.Which to me it's suitable for my 75 gallon reef.Pretty good reviews ... let me know if there anything better then this one..

    If not something like this. <a class="postlink" href="http://www.aquacave.com/aquac-remora-pro-proteinbr-skimmer-with-drain-fitting-br-rio-1400-pump-911.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.aquacave.com/aquac-remora-pr ... p-911.html</a> and <a class="postlink" href="http://www.aquacave.com/aquac-remora-surface-skimmerbr-for-rio-1400-pump-915.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.aquacave.com/aquac-remora-su ... p-915.html</a> if drilled I will need to know what size sump you have.
