yo shells are calcium . very good to raise ph in tanks great for most african chiclids bad for fish that require a lower ph

most pet store fish are kept at a ph of 7 and shells and coral in freshwater will only start to break down if the ph is below 6 i believe

but yeah dont use shells in tanks where you want a low ph

I hope they don't have lead in them. I have heard that shells helps to keep the water kind of hard, but I don't know that for sure. I used some onetime but had to take them out because my ph dropped, but it may have not been from the shells, but just incase it was, I took them out.

5:1 bleach solution, rinse well, air dry. or you could soak them overnight in some clean water and then allow them to airdry.
I used the big conch shells in my saltwater tank when I had it, my cleaning shrimp set up shop just outside of it and would hide inside it when they were done :)
