she has laid eggs every other day for about a week now and she eats them within two hours <yes it is her and not him or the angels i watch her eat them>
the water is perfect but the last 3 times he hasnt done his job....yes i must have the only MALE in the world who doesnt want to do it....<i have gotten 6 batches from this pair>
Maybe i should drop another male Discus in the tank and see what will happen. Any thoughts?

breeding tank? for younger, non-experienced discus this is common, they are not sure they can protect them any longer, so they eat the eggs. Rams will do this too

wat the heck are u thinkin man??!?! of course they'll eat eggs!!!! they are scared of the angels eating them, angels are verocious!!!

    minimum sizes are:

20 regular for 1 pair of breeding discus

30 gallon for a pair of breeding angels.

thats why ur discus wont leave eggs to protection only!!!

(not tryin to be mean fyi ;) )

    Re: bah

ok well i took the 3 angels out for 4 months and they stoppped breeding altogether so i put 3 back in and with in two days i had eggs <roughly 200> andthen freeswimmers then fry grew them out and traded 125 of the juvies for a completet 125 gal tall..
Dont ask me how or why but those two seem to like the angels in the tank.

What size tank is that ?

I read before that one pair of Discus should be kept in a 40 gallon.

Back in the 80's when I had lots of room and large tanks..I seperated my egg eating discus from her eggs, and raised them similar as you would angelfish eggs..started with a 5 gal and a bubbler, I never used the blue junk..but did daily water changes, I reared 3 hatches this way and then let the parents try..it worked, she didn't eat the eggs..you can also try a divider between the momand her eggs / the rest of your tank, she may be exhausting herself trying to defend them..good luck, beautiful discus tanks..

    Re: bah

if its a 35 gallon tall only 1 pair of discus should be kept in there. NO OTHER FISH, maybe some plants and a brick breeding cone for discus, but no other fish. NONE

    Re: bah

heh ya ya i know everyone says 10 gal per discus and adult angel
and i have an adult pair of discus and 3 subadult angels in a 35 gal with a HOT 350 mag filter on it.
the last spawn was tues and she left them alone for 2 days and then ate them and now she has spawned again today at 4 pm est <yes i know the norm is 7 days between spawns> and i watched the male pass over them
Yes the angels are still in the tank and i have yet to see them even get near he eggs.
Now all i can do is wait this is the 7 spawn she has had with out having any freeswimmers.

Fishman if i remove the angels they stop spawning alltogether and start fighting each other

    Re: bah

well ya have to know the whole story i got em from a guy who had noclue what discus need they were stunted..he had 5 of em in a tank with no clue i got em they were only 3inches <not counting fins>
he was going to cull them because they were not the big 7+ inch fish he wanted and after the fact that it was his fault.
i kept them in a 45 gal tall for about 3 months before they paired up.
i them moved them to a 30 gal grow out for my angel fry where they meet the 3 angels.
now the angels dont bother the discus and the discus dont bother the angels
and they all live in a 35 gal tall with no ill effects i have sold 3 spawns off this pair and all have grown out perfectly.
One of the fry the guy at the LFS keep in his show tank and is 6+ inches and a perfect blue with the stripes like his mom just alot bigger.

    Re: bah

do you change your water temps? i know when we had discus breeding Larry( our aquarium guy) would LOWER the temp after she laid...don't know id this helps or not..maybe you could put in a partition and seperate the mom and the eggs from the angels, cause the angels WILL eat the eggs give her some security?

    Re: bah

you drop the temp of the tank to make the produce more slime which the freeswimmers need to eat for the first week or two.....i have found out the problem i think, the beefheart i was feeding was a bad batch cause my friends discus started doing the same and he got his batch same place and time i got mine.
