Bent Guppy (Question regarding deformity & Advice Wanted)

    I just picked up a ten gallon tank from one of my sons friends. With the tank came a fancy guppy that looks like its bent in the center. It has the big fancy tail and some cool color to it but its body is crooked. Is there something wrong with this fish?

    It could just be a deformity or it could be TB.

    TB? I read online that they get that way with age too... I'm surprised the fish made it because instead of putting it in a bag they left just enough water to keep him covered. I wanted to clean the gravel some but figured the fish would appreciate it more if I just put more water in there. I want to bread livebearers in that tank but i'm not sure I want to breed guppies. I may give it to my daughter for her 5 gallon in her room. Just a lonely Danio in there right now...

    Tuberculosis, which is a possibility but not very common. There are other possibilities such as injury, poor water quality, food etc etc. Without really knowing the background of the fish anything mentioned would only be a guess.

    I wouldnt rule out poor water quality.. Its still pretty cloudy from where I added water about 3 hours ago. I'm gonna do a water change in a few days, clean the gravel, and change the carbon this weekend. Its a pretty fish. Just kind of goofy looking...

    I meant poor water quality over an extended period of time (before you acquired him).

    I know what you meant... The gravel was REALLY dirty which leads me to believe water changes never happened. I got the impression that the fish was pretty old too so no telling how long he's been in there. He's swimming around and eating so i'm sure he's gonna be fine. If it were TB would it affect other fish I put in the tank?

    Any time I see something that could possibly be TB I get scared. IF it is TB and you introduce other fish into the tank that are weak or become weak the TB will infect the other fish and possibly you. My suggestion would be to not panic ( like I do :) ). Observe the fish by itself for several weeks. If the fish shows no signs of the following it's not TB and the bent spine is a result from something mentioned above.

    * loss of appetite
    * bent spine
    * fish remains in seclusion and out of site
    * rapid breathing
    * eyes appear to be cloudy or "popping out"
    * fish lies on its side near bottom of aquarium
    * stomach of fish appears to be sunken
    * whittish blotches on exterior
    * degraded and frayed fins

    Yeah, now your freaking me out.... Pictures are on the way. Its a pretty active fish. I had a hard time getting the crappy pictures that I was able to get. It eats well and is swimming all over the tank.

    I had a male guppy developed a bent spine almost overnight and was told about the possibility of it being TB and was scared to go within 10 feet of the tank. :) I never did figure out what was wrong with him but he stopped eating and died within the next 2-3 days. Since yours is eating I'd lean away from the TB possibility.

    I dont think its TB. The fish doesnt look sick at all. Its just funny looking. I'm gonna send you the pics now...

    Its on the way now... My connection is slow all of a sudden. Verizon is installing my FIOS on Sunday so hopefully this wont be a problem anymore... :)

    He's swimming around this morning and doing just fine. I think my daughter will like him so I may move him into her tank and get her a few more...
