    CHARACINS

    General:
The approximately 1,500 characin species are divided into various families, most of which occur in South America, with smaller a numer found in Africa.
    The characins include these families:
moonfish (Citharinidae), hatchetfish (Gaasteropelecidae), African tetras (Alestiidae), headstanders (Anostomidae), Hemiodontidae, characins, and tetras (Characidae) and Lebiasinidae.

    The Habitats of Characins

Most characiform species are small schooling fish that occur in a wide variety of water types and consume small food organisms.
In addition, there are a number of dietary specialists.
With few exceptions (piranhas, black darter tetras), characins do not practice parental care.
They are very compatible with dwarf cichlids, catfish, and other characins.
Most species should be kept as a small group (approximately six specimens).
