    Chocolate Gourami

    Family:Gouramis, Osphronemidae.
Characteristics:2 in, male has light-edged anal fin.
    Tank/Water:37.5g, water type 1, 76-81F.
Care:Keep about six specimens in blackwater conditions:mineral-poor water with peat filtration, substrate made of sterilized peat (change regularly). Power filter to provide water movement. Roots as hiding and resting places. Feed small live foods, including Drosophila.
Habits:Current-loving group fish native to Southeast Asian blackwater canals. Hunts insect larvae. Males may be aggressive towards each other.
Compatibility:With other blackwater fish of the region.

Origins: Southeast Asia, found on the Malay Peninsula, Java, Sumatara, Borneo, and other islands.
    Size:2 & 1/2 in
    Diet:Prepared foods and livefoods.
    Water:Temperature 61-82F; soft (50 mg/l) and acidic (pH 6.0-6.5)
    Temperament: Rather shy and nervous

A Variable chocolate-brwn coloration and paler vertical bands characterize this mouth-brooder. The male has a more pointed dorsal fin than the female. Chocolate Gouramis from Borneo have red markings on their fins. Peat filtration is needed to maintain ideal water conditions, as are regular water changes.

Note: this is a fish with a reputation for being hard to keep, because it is susceptible to disease. It posese a worthy challenge to more experienced fishkeepers.
